What's the difference between,"at the gym or in a gym?

I guess the first one is true one .

"At the gym" is used much more often. "I met Sally at the gym." "How many miles did you run at the gym?" "I like to lift weights at the gym."

"In a gym" is used if you're trying to be very specific about something or someone's location. "I met Sally in a gym" could work, but for the other sentences above, it would sound weird.

Just ''in the gym" means in the buildind.

while "at the gym" may mean in the buildind as well as behind,in fron of, or just near to the building.

In the Gym means inside of a gym,it can be even yours if you can afford it. At the gym means it's a gym you and anyone else can attend, like a public place.
