When is It preferable to use the present perfect instead of the past simple

Present Perfect is connects the past and the present. There are words that might help you: never, ever, recently, lately, already, yet, et.) E.g.: I have never been to New York.

Past Simple used when you know the exact date. E.g.: I sold my house 2 days ago. You know the date, so you can use PS.
