A "New York minute" is not just a "brief time". That description is too vague. It is an "instant" or "split second".

(A "brief time" could be interpreted as "a few minutes" and is therefore NOT the same as a "New York minute". The whole point of that phrase is that life moves faster in NYC than elsewhere in the world, and New Yorkers have a reputation for being impatient.)
