Paragraphs are an important part of structuring any essay, story or extended piece of writing. Paragraphs give structure to a piece of writing. They are a way to organise your thoughts, and to give clarity to your ideas. A paragraph can have an internal structure with an introduction, main body and conclusion in the same way as an essay.

Using paragraphs means you can:

  • Build and develop ideas throughout your writing
  • Keep your writing clear and easier to understand/read

Change paragraphs when...

  • A new character comes along
  • A new event happens
  • A new idea is introduced
  • A new person is speaking
  • Time moves forward or backward a lot

It is a good idea to occasionally use linking words and phrases at the start of a new paragraph. They can help to link what you have said in the previous paragraph to what you are about to say in your new paragraph.
