Question

I can speak Spanish and Portuguese, but I wanna learn more English because I live in United States of America. It's really hard understand differents accents but that's not imposible. I'd like to read some advices.

Dear Mauri,

Learning a new language can be quite a challenge, especially when you're in a foreign environment. But with patience, determination and a strong-enough desire, you should be able to sail through any difficulties along the way.

Here's my simple advice for beginners:-



A. READ, READ, and READ

i) Read two (2) articles each day. Read out loud!

(For words you're unable to pronounce, google them and get the audio check online. It's free!)

ii) Check the dictionary after you have finished reading. Target five (5) new words (vocabulary) for each article. That gives you ten (10) new words each day.

(Be consistent; no excuses!)



B. WRITE, WRITE and WRITE

iii) Jot down the new words and their meanings in a pocket notebook. In your own native language, re-write (simplify) the meaning(s) of each new word in your own words.

iv) Each day, write one (1) simple sentence (English, preferably in the context of daily conversation) for each of the ten (10) new words. Memorize those sentences.

In no time, your self-made dictionary will grow thicker and thicker. :)



C. SPEAK OUT (HEAR, LISTEN & RESPOND)!

v) Use those sentences in your daily communication, especially with English native speakers. Look out for friendly faces. Ask for their feedback. "Is it correct to say it this way?" "How can I say it better? Please teach me."  When you show your eagerness to learn, people (usually, most of them) will respond to you in kindness.

vi) Listen to those who speak English effortlessly. Listen to the words they use, the way they construct their sentences, attentively. Learn from them. Respond accordingly.

For beginners, respond with short and simple sentences, e.g.: "Thank you. I never knew I could say it this way", or "You speak very well, I am motivated to learn from you", or "Your English is superb. Please teach me one sentence/ one word, will you?", etc.

vii) Bear in mind the basic rule of effective communication: Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

It does not require perfect language skills to be an effective communicator. Fret not, just speak! Don't mind the accent, don't mind the slang, and don't bother using bombastic words. Bottom line is, be sincere, be teachable, be nice to talk to, and be comfortable in your own skin.  Each of us are born with our unique mother tongue. In fact, you should make use of your mother tongue to assist you in learning and remembering new words of the English language. With time, you shall grasp and master the language, and shine in your own right!
