What's correct: 'Do what you're most afraid of' or 'Do what you're afraid the most' ?

The correct answer is (1)'do what you are most afraid of.' Grammatically we are taught not to end sentences with prepositions; however, 'of' is a dependant preposition as you must use it following 'afraid'. You cannot 'afraid something'... it must be 'afraid of something'. Thus the other answer is not possible unless it is changed to 'do what you are afraid of the most'. In both examples, 'most' intensifies the adjective 'afraid'. As it is more natural to put an intensifying adverb in front of an adjective, sentence (1) is the most commonly used.

The rule about not ending sentences with prepositions is a made-up "rule" that has no basis in good grammar. To follow it strictly would require some very clumsy sentences.

Do what you're afraid the most? but why not "what do you're afraid the most?"

That alternative doesn't make sense.
