Question

I can not desciphre what the authore wants to say, so I want someone to explaine me the meaning of this sentence. This is a story by Nathaniel  Hawthorne. Thank you in advance!

never read it, but it can mean that some ministers were going to come and serve the sermons in a church where they weren't served for some time, but again it's just guessing without context

Yes , without having the context it's a bit difficult , but I suppose that some minister is going to begin with sermons again from  Mr.... pulpit .

Based on what I read, the townspeople are more curious about Mr. Hooper's appearance than if some unknown minister came to clear Mr. Hooper of something, possibly a crime. I'm sorry if this wasn't much help. It's just my interpretation
