When is it 'paint in oil' and 'paint with oil'?

Explain the usage of different prepositions, please.

It would be clearer to say you paint with oil, although both are correct. Because we sometimes take things literally, to say you "paint in oil" could mean you're standing in a pool of oil while you are painting. Another way of saying it is, "I use oil paints".
