PAST PERFECT Always use... HAD + PARTICIPLE main verb EX. My girlfriend had bought a present for me!

PRESENT PERFECT Uses HAS for third person and HAVE for another ones (plural). EX. My mother has made a delicious cake for my birthday!

commented

1.This sentence is too short to show what exactly is a Past Perfect. Better would be: My girlfriend had bought a present for me, before I canceled my birthday party.
2.This sentence is too short to show what exactly is a Present Perfect. Better example: My mother has made a delicious cake for my birthday two times in my life!

which one is correct? I have never got a chance to visit America or I never got a chance to visit America. Please tell me the difference.

The first sentence is present perfect. The second sentence is past simple.

The first sentence is "present" - i.e. before this present time.

The second sentence is "past" - and the response would be "when" .........If "when" is not important then the first sentence is better.

I never got the chance to visit America. When? Oh, on my last round the world trip!

Both sentences are correct - it depends on the perspective of the speaker. On the message the speaker is trying to give....

commented

Fifty-fifty :) Im not sure, but if there is the word "never" then it looks like Present Perfect is much more correct: I have never got a chance to visit America. Because NEVER means NEVER EVER :) not in the past to now, and now THE NEVER is still exist, its still true. Hard to explain. Im not native english speaker so maybe Im wrong. Past Perfect would be full correct this way: I didn't get a chance to visit America. (on my last round the world trip).

commented

Yes, I agree. There is the "never" so is correct to use present perfect. If there's not the "never" you just use simple past.
